Tips on How You Can Facilitate Your Child's Reading

For many parents, helping their children study at home may be a difficult task. This difficult task is especially true for people working from home or caring for many children at once. Being the adult assisting a child in their learning can be tricky since, for many, it has been a while since we have practiced reading, writing, mathematics, or remembering a scientific equation. Here are some tips to help you support literacy skills at home.

Tip #1 Understand the state learning standards

Understanding the standards is critical, and you can still enhance your child’s learning with supplementary materials. Florida Best Standards are the essential skills for each grade and are specific to each subject. Each standard builds upon the previous grade level and progresses to the next. It is beneficial for parents to understand the standard outcomes of the year level above and below their child’s current level. Even though priority standards have been defined, it is expected that the curriculum in its entirety is taught.

Tip #2  Engaging your child in reading

If your child periodically does not show an interest in reading, continue to read to your child as he plays quietly. Eventually, the child will again be eager to participate in reading.

Tip #3 Establish a clear routine

Try to read each day (Find the time when you and your child are relaxed and interested in reading, such as at bedtime or after a nap), and let your child choose the books and how many pages he or she wants to read.

Tip #4 Follow the advice of your child’s school

Most parents who start supporting home learning are not certified teachers. Recognize your child’s effort and stay positive. Follow the teacher’s or school’s advice.

Tip #5 Practice reading and writing together

Looking at the letters while hearing them blended into words, listening to the language’s flow, and considering the meaning of the text—can all be aided by having someone read aloud. Your child can summarize what they read or compose their own creative stories at home and read them to their family members.

Akiema, TRIO Connections, Seminole State College

"...A great resource for the high school students that we work with in the district, especially those who are trying to get reading/verbal scores up to meet graduation requirements."

Sylvanna, Mother of a Student

"I feel extremely fortunate that my daughter has had an opportunity to learn from Cynthia at Student Achievement Institute.  The progress she had made was unbelievable-she went from a percentile rank of 15% in August of 2016 to an 84% less than a full school year! I am certain that the tools she has learned from Cynthia will help her excel."
