Learning is an enduring process. I am excited to have the opportunity to share my knowledge of literacy learning and helpful techniques to help educational organizations and educators to facilitate comprehension development for diverse students. I specialize in assisting students in interacting effectively with the text to develop or enhance comprehension. I have over 18 years of teaching and leadership experience in suburban and urban elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools.

As an English, reading, English Language Learner Compliance Specialist and instructor at various schools, some with similar demographics, I realized there was a disconnect between oral language, syntactic knowledge, and printed text. Every year, I adopted pre, during and post-reading strategies to facilitate students’ understanding of a passage or develop a deeper understanding of the text. I understood that students needed to be reminded of these strategies and know-how to effectively use them and other reading techniques to become proficient readers. I used research-based and best practices for my students; however, I continuously observed comprehension deficits. ReaCT materialized from teaching experiences and research.

 

Reading Comprehension Technique (ReaCT) is a step-by-step process or method in which the reader analyzes printed text through the narrative structure of individual sentences. The student learns how to effectively interpret ideas in a paragraph or passage to connect ideas and explore the differences in sentence structure to understand the author’s ideologies and methods of development. Comprehension is impacted by syntactic knowledge.

 

ReaCT is a method in which students learn to read and comprehend through narrative structure and syntactic knowledge. The technique helps students break down sentences, then connect the ideas as they read, which allows them to understand the text, passage, or story. This method provides support for educational leaders, educators, and students. When instructing my students, I immediately saw success. Students became less frustrated, and they got it!
